A nine-week-old puppy is desperate for a new home after being callously abandoned in the snow in Leeds on one of the coldest days of the year.
Shiver, as Dogs Trust staff have named the pup, has been described as a “miracle dog” after surviving the bitterly cold temperatures.
The cross-breed was found scavenging for food by some bins in Harehills, Leeds, and rescued by a kind-hearted member of the public on Monday. (Jan 21)
The region had experienced its heaviest snowfall in two years and seven inches of snow had fallen in Leeds the night before Shiver was found.
Whilst many people made the most of the wintry wonderland, Shiver was left to fend for herself after being cruelly cast aside by her owners.
Amanda Sands, manager of Dogs Trust Leeds, said: “We’re not sure exactly how long she had been out in the cold but it’s a miracle she survived in those temperatures.
“When she was brought in she was freezing cold and couldn’t stop shivering. She was clearly hungry and we think she’d been looking for food by the bins where she was found.”
Since arriving at the Dogs Trust centre, Shiver has been one pampered pooch after getting lots of much needed warmth, love and attention from the staff.
Amanda said: “She’s had lots to eat and is now back to full health. I’m amazed not only that she survived such a bitterly cold day but also that she’s not needed medical treatment.
“Shiver is such a lovely, playful puppy and thankfully she doesn’t seem to have been affected by what must have been a very traumatic experience for her.
“She’s such a pretty little thing and loves being around people. She has so much energy and is always running around. It’s great to see her so happy.”
Sadly, Shiver has not been the first dog this winter to have been found abandoned in dire weather conditions.
Amanda said: “For us it’s not unusual to have a dog brought in after being abandoned in the cold. I urge everyone to keep a close eye on their dogs,
especially in such freezing conditions.
“I can’t understand how anyone can lose a puppy considering they need constant supervision. A puppy should never be left alone and often they are not vaccinated.
“I was stunned when I heard Shiver had survived but hopefully she can be rehomed to a loving owner and start a new, happy life.”
The staff at Dogs Trust are keen to rehome Shiver next week and are looking for a home where she will not be left on her own during the day.
“She needs lots of walks and will happily live with other dogs,” said Amanda. If you think you can offer Shiver a warm, welcoming home and mark an end to her
cold snap, then do visit Dogs Trust Leeds Rehoming Centre, Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS15 4NL or call 0113 281 4920.
